Präsentationen, Publikationen und die Frankfurter Buchmesse

Obwohl dies das erste Posting nach langer Zeit ist, geht das Projekt in der Zwischenzeit weiter und ich habe in den letzten Monaten verschiedene Präsentationen und Artikel vorbereitet. Im Juni hatte ich Gelegenheit, das Projekt und isländische Bibliotheken auf einer Veranstaltung der Western European Studies Group der ACRL auf der ALA Konferenz in New Orleans vorzustellen. Letzte Woche war ich dann bei einem Seminar für Österreichische Bibliothekarinnen in Strobl.
Außerdem sind zwei Beiträge erschienen. Der eine mit einem Fokus auf dem Projekt und seinen Ergebnissen erschien in einer Ausgabe der BUB Forum Bibliothek und Information, Deutschlands meistgelesener Fachzeitschrift im Bibliothekswesen. In derselben Ausgabe erschien auch ein Essay über die Bedeutung des Lesens und der Bibliotheksbesuche für ein langes, glückliches Leben von Hrafn Andres Hardarson und Margret Sigurgeirsdóttir aus der Stadtbibliothek Kopavogur und ein Beitrag von Beate Detlefs über die Programmarbeit des Goethe-Instituts in Island. Die Büchereiperspektiven aus Österreich haben sich mehr auf die Bibliotheken in Island konzentriert und einen Beitrag von Auður Rán Þorgeirsdóttir und Kristín Viðarsdóttir über die Lesestadt Reykjavík sowie einen Artikel von Hólmkell Hreinsson über die Amtsbibliothek Akureyri als Kulturkraftwerk gebracht. Beide Zeitschriften haben im Vorfeld der Frankfurter Buchmesse auch viel über Isländische Bücher und Island als Leseland gebracht.

Presentations, Publications and the Frankfurt Book Fair

Although this is the first posting for a long time, the project is going on and I have been busy preparing presentations and writing articles the last months. In June I had the opportunity to speak to ACRL’s Western European Studies Group during a session at ALA’s annual conference in New Orleans, Lousiana, USA. Last week I presented to a seminar for Austrian Librarians in Strobl, Austria.
Two articles have recently been published as well. The first one focusses on the project and its findings. It came in Germany’s most popular library journal BUB Forum Bibliothek und Information. Furthermore the issue features an essay by Hrafn Andres Hardarson and Margret Sigurgeirsdóttir of Kopavogs public library about the importance of reading and library visits and an article about Goethe Institute’s programs in Iceland by Beate Detlefs. The Austrian journal Buechereiperspektiven concentrates on libraries in Iceland and features Reykjavík as a city of reading by Auður Rán Þorgeirsdóttir and Kristín Viðarsdóttir and the municipal library of Akureyri as a power plant of culture by Hólmkell Hreinsson. Both journals come with several more articles on books and reading in Iceland because of the Frankfurt Book Fair starting next week.

Erste Präsentation von Ergebnissen im internationalen Rahmen

Während noch Material zu sichten ist – die Tour aus dem Sommer ist beinahe ausgewertet – steht für mich schon die erste Präsentation in einem internationalen Kontext an. Die Hochschule von Oslo veranstaltet im Dezember eine Forschungskonferenz zu Öffentlichen Bibliotheken in den Nordischen Ländern. Meine Präsentation dort wird sich auf Spaziergangswissenschaft als neue Methode der Bibliothekssoziologie konzentrieren aber auch die Studienreisen nach Island werden Thema sein, denn sie stehen exemplarisch für meine Herangehensweise.

First presentation of findings in an international context

While there is still some material to sift – the summer tour is nearly evaluated – I am going to present the first paper about the project in an international context. Oslo university college is hosting a Nordic conference on public library research in December. My presentation there will focus on strollology as a new method in library sociology but it will cover my study tours to Iceland as well because they are exemplary for my approach.

Special edition: Books on ships

Since I am on the high sea I thought it would be a good idea to write something about books on ships. There is no library on board of my ship, the Norröna, but obviously internet connection. Internet connection on vessels is also the reason for the decline of a service, Icelandic libraries used to offer. Books for the seamen have been assorted in special boxes the ships took with them on their trips. Especially the big trawlers, spending several weeks on sea and harbouring at different ports during their travel highly appreciated a service like this. Other libraries are offering special lending conditions for seamen and – above all – no overdue fees. But since the ships have been equipped with internet connections, libraries have been noticing a shrinking demand. On the other hand in the last months some ships asked for books again … did the internet become boring for the seamen? Maybe the future is to compile special e-book collections for the ships.

Sonderausgabe: Bücher auf Schiffen

Da ich derzeit auf hoher See bin, liegt es nahe, etwa über Bücher auf Schiffen zu schreiben. Mein Schiff, die Norröna hat leider keine Bibliothek, aber offensichtlich eine Internetverbindung. Der Internetzugang auf Schiffen ist auch der Grund für den Niedergang einer Dienstleistung, die von isländischen Bibliotheken angeboten wurde. Bücher für Seeleute wurden für spezielle Kisten zusammengestellt, die die Schiffe mit auf Fahrt nahmen. Vor allem große Trawler, die wochenlang auf See sind und dabei verschiedene Häfen anlaufen, begrüßten diesen Service sehr. Andere Bibliotheken haben spezielle Ausleihkonditionen für Seeleute, vor allem brauchen diese keine Übeziehungsgebühren zahlen. Aber seit die Schiffe mit Internetzugängen ausgestattet sind, beobachten die Bibliotheken eine sinkende Nachfrage. Andererseits haben in den letzten Monaten wieder einige Schiffe nachgefragt … wird das Internet auf die Dauer langweilig? Vielleicht liegt die Zukunft in der Zusammenstellung spezieller E-Book Sammlungen für Schiffe.
